About
I’m Jéan Velloen, a Specialist Master in Cloud & Engineering at Deloitte Digital, based in Wellington, New Zealand.
I’ve spent close to twenty years building and running systems – from managing 160+ Linux servers for South African telecoms, to leading cloud engineering at Bank of New Zealand, to architecting AWS solutions at Deloitte. The thread through all of it has been the same: making things work reliably at scale and giving developers the tools to ship with confidence.
My background is in network and systems engineering. I got into DevOps before it had a name, and that infrastructure-first thinking still shapes how I approach cloud architecture today. I work mostly with AWS, Kubernetes, OpenShift, and containerised workloads – designing CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, and the deployment strategies around them.
This blog is where I write up patterns and problems I run into: serverless orchestration, event-driven architectures, encryption, observability, and whatever else seems worth documenting.
